Coffee already owns your morning. Protein coffee just asks it to pull a little more weight.
One rule makes all of this work: cold liquid first, powder second, ice last. That order is the whole trick, and it's the reason most first attempts end up lumpy. Get it right and every cup below comes out smooth.
Eight recipes, and most of them take about a minute.
The Base Method Behind Every Recipe
Learn these four steps once and you've basically learned all eight recipes.
You'll need
- 1 serving of NōA Protein Coffee (3.5 tablespoons)
- 8 to 12 oz cold water or cold milk
- Ice
- A handheld frother or shaker bottle
Steps
- Pour the cold liquid into a glass or shaker.
- Add the powder to the liquid.
- Froth or shake for about 20 seconds.
- Add ice, then taste and adjust.
Water gives you something light and bright, closer to a classic iced coffee. Milk makes it creamier and brings its own protein along, roughly 8g per 8 oz.
Using Your Own Protein Powder
Already have a tub of protein powder sitting in the pantry? Use it. Pour 4 to 6 oz of cold brew over 4 oz of cold milk, add one scoop of vanilla protein powder, and shake hard for 20 seconds before it hits the ice.
Just keep everything cold. Heat is what makes whey seize up and clump, which is the whole reason hot protein coffee has such a bad reputation. Our guide to protein powder in coffee breaks down the science.
Pick Your Starting Flavor
NōA makes four protein coffee flavors. All of them land at 10g of protein and 70 calories, with 0g added sugar, and all of them mix cold.
-
Original Protein Coffee
Smooth, straight iced coffee. Start here if you're new to this. -
French Vanilla Protein Coffee
Soft, classic vanilla with gentle sweetness. -
Coconut Mocha Protein Coffee
Chocolatey, with a tropical coconut finish. -
Honey Bun Protein Coffee
Warm cinnamon and that fresh-from-the-bakery sweetness.
Every flavor is sweetened with stevia and skips sugar alcohols, so the finish stays clean. See how stevia stacks up in our guide to the best sweetener for coffee. Real instant coffee does the heavy lifting. Natural flavor handles the rest.
1. Classic Iced Protein Coffee
10g protein (about 20g with dairy milk) · 1 minute · Shaker bottle
This is the one to make first. It drinks like a good café iced coffee, and it shows you what the base tastes like before you start adding things to it.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Original Protein Coffee
- 10 oz cold water or cold milk
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Pour the cold liquid into a shaker.
- Add the powder on top.
- Shake hard for 20 seconds.
- Pour over a full glass of ice.
Start with water
Make your first cup with water and your second with milk. You'll taste exactly what the milk is doing, and after that you'll know which one is yours.
2. Iced French Vanilla Protein Coffee
12g protein (about 20g with dairy milk) · 1 minute · Frother
Think iced coffee with a generous pour of vanilla creamer, except the creamer is doing something useful. Oat milk gives this one a silky body that feels expensive. Dairy milk works beautifully too and pushes the protein higher.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA French Vanilla Protein Coffee
- 10 oz cold oat milk or dairy milk
- 1 cup ice
- A pinch of cinnamon
Method
- Pour the cold milk into a tall glass.
- Add the powder.
- Froth for 30 seconds to build a light foam.
- Add ice, then dust the top with cinnamon.
Buy the barista version
Barista-style oat milk is formulated to froth, so you get a thicker foam that actually lasts until the bottom of the glass.
3. Coconut Mocha Protein Coffee
10g protein · 2 minutes · Frother
For the people who reach for chocolate before they reach for anything else. Coconut milk plays up the tropical side, and a spoonful of cocoa takes the mocha somewhere richer.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Coconut Mocha Protein Coffee
- 10 oz cold coconut milk (the carton kind)
- 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Add a splash of the milk to your glass.
- Stir in the cocoa until it turns into a paste.
- Pour in the rest of the milk, then the powder.
- Froth for 30 seconds and pour over ice.
Wet the cocoa first
That paste is the whole move. Dry cocoa floats no matter how long you stir, so wetting it first is what keeps the drink smooth.
4. Cinnamon Roll Protein Coffee
20g protein with dairy milk · 1 minute · Frother
Honey Bun already tastes like a glazed cinnamon roll on its own. A little cinnamon and nutmeg push it the rest of the way there, and the sweetness still comes from stevia and natural flavors with 0g added sugar.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Honey Bun Protein Coffee
- 10 oz cold milk
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- A dash of nutmeg
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Pour the cold milk into a glass.
- Add the powder, cinnamon and nutmeg together.
- Froth for 20 seconds.
- Add ice and finish with more cinnamon.
Froth the spices in
Add them with everything else rather than at the end. Cinnamon sprinkled on top just sits on the surface and ends up on your top lip.
5. Protein Coffee with Cold Foam
13g to 22g protein · 3 minutes · Frother
Cold foam is the move that makes a home cup feel like something you waited in line for. It's just cold milk, frothed until it's thick enough to sit on top. Any NōA protein coffee flavor works underneath it.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Protein Coffee, any flavor
- 8 oz cold water or cold milk
- 3 to 4 oz cold skim milk
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Mix the base in a glass and add ice.
- Pour the skim milk into a separate cup.
- Froth it 30 to 45 seconds, until thick and glossy.
- Spoon the foam over the top.
Skim milk wins here
It holds foam the longest, which feels backwards but comes down to protein and fat content. Save the whole milk for the coffee underneath.
6. Blended Protein Coffee Frappé
18g protein with dairy milk · 2 minutes · Blender
Some mornings call for a spoon. This one blends up thick and frozen, and NōA Honey Bun Protein Coffee turns it into something close to a cinnamon-roll milkshake.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Protein Coffee, any flavor
- 8 oz cold milk
- 1½ cups ice
Method
- Add the milk to the blender first.
- Add the powder next.
- Pile the ice on top.
- Blend 30 to 45 seconds and serve right away.
Freeze your milk
Pour milk into an ice cube tray and swap those in for the ice. Your frappé stays thick to the last sip instead of turning watery halfway down.
7. Peanut Butter Banana Coffee Protein Shake
22g protein with dairy milk · 2 minutes · Blender
This is the one for mornings when coffee alone isn't going to cut it. Banana brings sweetness and body, peanut butter brings richness, and together they turn a drink into something closer to breakfast.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA Original Protein Coffee or NōA Coconut Mocha Protein Coffee
- 8 oz cold milk
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- ½ cup ice
Method
- Blend the milk, powder, banana and peanut butter.
- Give it 30 seconds.
- Add the ice.
- Blend again until smooth.
Freeze the banana
Chunk it and freeze it ahead of time. Frozen fruit does the thickening for you, so you can cut the ice and keep the flavor concentrated.
8. Pumpkin Spice Protein Coffee
20g protein with dairy milk · 2 minutes · Blender
Everybody has a pumpkin spice season, and this version uses actual pumpkin instead of a syrup pump. NōA French Vanilla Protein Coffee sits underneath it perfectly.
Ingredients
- 1 serving of NōA French Vanilla Protein Coffee
- 10 oz cold milk
- 2 tablespoons canned pure pumpkin
- ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Add the milk, powder, pumpkin and spice to a blender.
- Blend for 20 seconds.
- Pour over ice.
- Top with a pinch of extra spice.
Skip the pie filling
Grab pure pumpkin instead. Pie filling arrives pre-sweetened and pre-spiced, which takes the decision out of your hands.
Tips for a Smoother Cup
Keep everything cold. Cold milk, cold brew, cold water, straight from the fridge. This is the single thing that separates a smooth cup from a disappointing one.
Add powder to liquid, never the reverse. Pouring liquid onto a pile of dry powder traps air pockets, and those pockets become the lumps you spend the next minute chasing around the glass with a spoon.
A handheld frother is worth the counter space. 20 seconds of it gives you a café-style texture that a spoon will never touch. A shaker bottle gets you most of the way there, and the blender is for frappés and shakes.
One more thing: measure your serving. More powder sounds like more protein, but it mostly makes the cup thicker and sweeter than you wanted.
Prepping ahead works well here too. Mix your cup the night before, leave it in the fridge, and give it one shake before the ice goes in.
Can You Make Protein Coffee Hot?
A lot of people search for a hot protein coffee recipe, and the honest answer comes down to what whey does under heat. Whey protein starts to unfold at around 149°F, and once it unfolds it grabs onto itself and clumps. Freshly brewed coffee sits well above that.
That's why NōA Protein Coffee is built for iced. Cold is where whey stays silky and fully dissolved, so that's where we designed it to live. The full explanation is in our guide to how heat affects whey protein. If you want a warm mug specifically, collagen powder is the usual choice.
Protein Coffee FAQ
How much protein powder should I add to coffee?
For a cup you drink every day, 10g hits the sweet spot. It adds up across a week and still tastes like coffee. Save the full 25g to 30g scoop for a shake that's replacing a meal, because that much in a coffee turns thick and cloying fast.
What's the best protein to put in coffee?
Whey protein isolate dissolves cleanly in cold liquid, which is exactly why NōA uses it. Whatever you choose, the temperature of your liquid matters more than the brand on the tub.
Is protein coffee good for you?
It's the coffee you were already drinking, carrying a little more nutrition. Protein tends to keep you fuller than carbs or fat. That's one of the benefits of protein, and it's why the cup holds you longer into the morning. For how much protein you actually need in a day, our guide to protein powder walks through it.
Can I make protein coffee the night before?
Yes, and some people prefer it that way. Mix it, refrigerate it overnight, shake it once in the morning, then add your ice. The flavor rounds out while it sits.
Does NōA Protein Coffee have caffeine?
Yes. It's made with real instant coffee, so every serving brings caffeine with it.
Does NōA Protein Coffee contain dairy?
Yes. Whey protein isolate comes from milk. For a dairy-free version of these recipes, use a plant protein and a plant milk with the same cold-first method.
Can I use these recipes with my own protein powder?
Absolutely. Swap one NōA serving for 4 to 6 oz of cold brew plus a scoop of vanilla protein powder, and everything else stays the same.
